Winamp, despite its buggy interface and an outdated design, has a unique feature, which is its ability to rip tracks from a CD, rip them to a protected DVD disc, and tag the original file and the new “CD” version with the metadata from the original. iTunes apparently has this, so it was likely intentionally disabled by Apple; iTunes has lost popularity, and some of the computer-literate people Ive spoken to are not on Windows anymore, so arent using Apple. Winamp Pro doesnt have a missing feature, but, because its so rare, I believe the developer has not kept up to date.

The whole point of this app (or project) was getting the old winamp interface to work. And it does. Now, the app itself isnt great (and some people would disagree) but the sound converter has good presets for most popular media formats (MP3, AAC, AIFF, OGG, FLAC, etc) with presets for portable CD writers, hard drives, pen drives, memory sticks, etc. The interface was originally an idea from my (original) name, Lightbulb, and built by myself and the Fondazione team. Whats great is that, although we have five languages (English, Hungarian, Slovak, Russian and Turkish) and five versions of the app, the core setup and interface is still the same and the binaries work in all languages.
When you open Winamp and want to rip the CD to MP3 or OGG, the app will prompt you for the disk which you want to rip. If you dont, it will choose a random disk. Just remember, you wont be able to see the progress of the rips from the list of the rips as Winamp.exe has to open the drive, but its not too bad. The app will change your volume settings if you have an iPod, if you have an HTC Touch or any other device that doesnt have a volume control. The app also detects your MP3 collection and either creates a playlist for you or lets you choose which playlist you want to use (if you want multiple playlists, but I didnt even test that). There are also options in the settings to adjust your maximum bitrate, maximum number of simultaneous music sources (which is in the settings too, you probably dont want to set it higher than 2), add unneeded drives, adjust scanning and filtering options, and configure your encoder settings. In my case (and yours, if you have Windows 7 or above) I left the volume settings and configuration alone, and used the “high performance” preset for my AAC encoder settings.

I love Winamp Pro. I cant imagine not having it, since I work in a completely different field than I used to, and have music pretty much alwaysturned off. I use winamp to just load my new mp3 and search for that one I had on the way home.

I love Winamp Pro. It used to be one of my go to programs. I can use it now for anything really. Mp3, Tuner, Ringtone, recorders, and even FLAC files. I had 6.83 working great. I had to put 6.55 though. 6.55 was too buggy.
There is so much to do in this Pro version. If you dont already have it it would be worth the money, even though its a bit pricey.
I have had Winamp Pro for a while now and use it as my default music player on my netbook to stream music from my iTunes library. I tried to install Winamp Classic for a short time but its far too buggy. Simply because of its age it doesnt work properly in 7 and above. But despite its age it still works well. It is one of the best alternative music players for simple user experience and its price is very affordable.
If you use Windows 7 and dont want to use Winamp Classic, then Winamp Pro is the best option for you, and for a reasonable price, at $40 it really is a bargain. You can find it on Microsoft Store .
