PowerDirector is the most feature-rich consumer video-editing software for PCs — or any other operating system. It is a very competent editor when you’re just sticking a few clips together in the timeline. However, it’s leaps and bounds ahead of the competition when you have a longer, richer project. If you want to edit a wedding video, create a stand-up routine, or make a holiday video for YouTube, then you need a quality editor. There are many tools for quick and dirty editing, like filters and transitions, which work well for Web clips or short clips. But for longer clips, you need more editing options like rotoscoping, motion tracking, multi-cam editing, and content-aware effects. I had a blast editing my travel film, Nightless City. I had to go with Pinnacle’s more-complete Ultimate suite because of PowerDirector’s more-limited capabilities.
PowerDirector’s greatest strength is its accessibility. It does not require you to learn any new commands. Your familiar mouse, keyboard, and browser will take you right to your final product. While you can drag and drop any format, the templates for creating videos are really limited.
You can manipulate your clips by dragging them around. Even if you leave PowerDirector working in its default mode, you can still see and edit the clip’s properties and fine-tune it as you would on the Mac version of Premiere Pro. You can add keyframes and place markers for trimming by pressing and holding the cursor over the timeline and selecting one of the options on the contextual menu.
The program’s keyframe editor works very well. You can easily control the program’s timeline as you move your cursor across it, just as you would if you were working in Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro. You also can adjust your timeline as you do so, which is one of the program’s standout editing features. You can also save a template, or a set of presets that PowerDirector uses during editing.
