During editing, you can switch to the iPhone mode, where you can preview your movie and track clips, but you can’t see any frames or edit them. Internet streaming is a snap via the HLS protocol, or you can save it on an SD card or external drive. The import/export feature allows you to move projects in CyberLink from other programs and into PowerDirector or vice versa.
It’s a fast, lightweight, and feature-rich app for students and professionals, where you have a choice of third-party tools, or you can edit with the free version. You can open/save files, make lower-resolution videos, and tag clips with a title, duration, description, and keywords. Users of the free version can save projects, titles, and effects for future reference. You have to install the Application Manager, too, and it can cause problems when you upgrade to the paid version, so stick with the free version until you’re ready to upgrade. If you’re looking for a robust video editor for students, the non-free CyberLink VideoStudio is only $14.99, a one-time fee. It lacks a few features that PowerDirector has, but, like the Pro version, it’s affordable.

As always with the CyberLink suites, you get extras for pro users and buffs. In the Project Room left menu, you get a 4K Project Room (for those 5K video editing displays, as well as the latest resolution for 1080p monitors). The Project Room also offers a separate 5.1 channelroomfor mixing multiple audio-visual sources.
Another set of features for CyberLink’s pros is that you get a project previewer and H.264 codecs to optimize encoded video. Project Room 3 offers up to 4K preview, while Project Room 4 offers up to 4K and, for selected clips, up to 8K and even 3D Video. All projects have a tool to check audio delay.
Included are two WideVue cameras (DVR and live), two Bolex cameras, and a camera with a tripod. A multi-camera recorder, for capturing content for TV programs, is available. A video-converter for converting video to a variety of formats is available. You can record video directly from your USB camera for playback. A variety of motion graphic PiPs, such as the Social Motion Graphics PiP set, can be created and applied to video in the project. And, of course, you get CyberLink’s brand of onscreen menus and project controls.
The highlights for these latest CyberLink video editors include the addition of a new timeline view and, coming in CyberLink’s 2016.0 update, a multi-editor interface. You can also add blur, sharpen, and effects to videos, but other than that, for example, you don’t have the ability to alter the color or brightness of your video. However, you do get a variety of special effects, such as Slow Motion, Time-lapse, Animation, and can turn 3D Video into regular video. You can also create Audio effects, such as Autofill and EQ.
